i got to design most of the Hyoomans for the Susan Strong episode of Adventure time here's a bunch of turnarounds for the episode. the new character heavy episode are a ton of work but i think i enjoy working on them the most because it's cool coming up with so many new characters.

at some point in the episode i had to set them all on fire (they seemed to like it).

i had to draw them all without hats. *spoiler alert * they were fish peeps.

i did these before and after poses of these chuds for a scene that lasted about two seconds. it took me super long.

this is an earlier version of the b pose. i had to go and change all the mouths because they were way to detailed. i like this version better tho' so i'm posting it.

i got to draw up the ice kings ms paint drawings on his computer.

I think I've mentioned on the blog before that I've been working doing character and prop design on the cartoon network show Adventure Time. If you haven't had a chance to watch it yet and you like cartoons you should try to put aside 15 minutes to watch an episode (mondays at 8pm on CN). i pretty much fell hard for the show the first time i saw the pilot, and had to get a job on the show. The first batch of episodes of season 2 have aired and I figured I'd post some of the designs I got to draw. hope you dig em'. I've had a ton of fun drawing for this show.

art show and wondercon wrap up...

This past weekend was a busy one! phew! i'm still reeling from it. First off i had a most excellent of art openings friday and saturday night at Mission: comics and art. Thanks to everyone who came to either or both opening, all the bands that played, the dancers, and leef for hosting the opening at the gallery. The show should be up till the end of the month so stop by if your in the mission. also that weekend was wondercon. sold a bunch of prints shirts and books. thanks to everyone who stopped by the table. here's some pictures.

here's some more sketches. these were originally printed in the Meathaus Sketchbook go for the gold along with a some of the stuff i posted here a while ago.
I've noticed that something i tend to draw alot is little people inside of people, or people using animal heads as hats. when i doodle and don't think about it it's something that i draw over and over again.

here are some post its with the same theme.

eventually I'd like to do something with this idea. a story or animation but I'm not quite sure what it's all about yet so that remains to be a project for the future.

It smells of chain letter to me, but a relatively nice and harmless one. Normally I wouldn't forward chain letters, but I think the nomination is more about giving your friends and people you admire a little bit of appreciation and props for the works that they do and share with everyone out there in the ether-world.

After looking around a little and managed to find that the kreativ blogger award was originally created in Norway by Husfruas Memoarer. since don't speak (or read) a lick of Norwegian, it's easier to see how things developed by popping over to Carol Garvin's blog where she explains it all quite nicely. In the original version there were no real strings attached to the whole thing. somewhere along the way somebody added all the rules so I'd rather revert to something more within he original spirit of the award.

A lot of my friends have already received nominations, so i focused mostly on people of whom I just admire their work.

This week was a very busy for me as far as public appearances. It all Started last weekend with Indy Euphoria in Sacramento. It was Sac-towns first Indy comic convention and unfortunately it was scheduled for the same weekend as an anime con, so it was really, really, really slow and lowly attended. But it was still a cool convention to do and i somehow managed to cover my costs of getting out there. Indy Euphoria was also held in this cool building, The Scottish Rite center, which i guess is an uber free-mason hangout. The second stop this week was the "into the ring, sumo style" art show that i did a piece for. Plenty of folks there and Free Saki made for a good time. and yesterday i went down to SLG headquarters for the second San Jose Comics Fest. Pretty cool little quarterly free comic con hosted by SLG. pictures below

"Popgun" Takes A Fourth Shot

As comic books become more and more prevalent in popular culture, the mainstream crowd is becoming increasingly aware that comics have more to offer than just superpowers and spandex. Image Comics has certainly done their part to showcase the diversity of the medium, perhaps most prominently through "Popgun," a series of anthology books filled to the brim with short stories of various shapes, sizes and genres.

In February, Image will release the fourth and latest installment of "Popgun," featuring a cover drawn by "Choker" artist Ben Templesmith and stories from illustrator Frank Stockton, "Life of a Fetus" creator Andy Ristiano, "Sulk" creator Jeffrey Brown, "Popgun" veterans and creative duo Amanda Becker and Janet Kim, and many more. CBR News spoke to the aforementioned creators and "Popgun" editor D.J. Kirkbride about what readers can expect from the upcoming volume.

"We wanted to make [the fourth 'Popgun' installment] even more eclectic and exciting and bigger than the previous volumes," Kirkbride told CBR about his goals for the upcoming volume. "In terms of the first two goals, I do think we achieved them, to be honest. There are so many different styles and tones for each story in this collection, it's kind of overwhelming, in the best possible way. We continue to find great and varied talent, which is what makes these books work. We're very lucky that so many excellent creators, new and established, are interested in working with us."

As for Kirkbride's third goal — making "Popgun's" fourth volume bigger than previous editions — that mission was also accomplished. "It's 512 pages compared to 448 for volume one and 472 for volumes two and three, and all at the same price," he said. "That's pretty cool, and we're grateful that Image let us do it, as, well, it's kind of crazy."

Cartoonist Andy Ristiano contributed a humorous 20-page story titled "Night of the Living Vidiots" that posits a spin on the classic zombie tale by turning the flesh-eaters into walking advertisements — literally, single-minded humans with television sets for heads. "'Night of the Living Vidiots' is the first story in the book and a great way to kick off this volume of 'Popgun,'" said Kirkbride of Ristiano's contribution. "'Vidiots' is a hyper, wordy, colorful and amazingly fun 20-page adventure. Though it's very humorous and fast-paced, Andy weaves in some effective commentary on consumerism and the media."

"I didn't want to knock television shows — I end up watching a lot of TV while I'm working and I enjoy a good story no matter what form it takes — I can't, however, stand watching or listening to commercials," Ristiano described of his story. "When I first got out of school, I used to animate on commercials, and doing that made me realize that for every commercial there were people just sitting around in rooms trying to figure out the best way to trick people into wanting their products. When you watch commercials, they seem so insincere and insulting, and while you might think commercials are completely ineffectual, the information in there sneaks in. I can still remember commercial jingles from when I was a kid. It's upsetting to think there is so much space in my brain devoted to remembering things like the theme to a 'Fruit Islands Cereal' commercial when it could be put to better use. There is no escape."

In order to combat the commercial-addled vidiots, Ristiano created a quartet of heroes with various artistic inclinations. "The Bookworm represents the written word, the Painter represents the visual arts, the Martial Artist represents the physical arts and the Rocker represents music," he said. "The main characters are the people who are focused and inspired enough with what they are interested in that popular media does not have control over their lives and how they choose to live them. These artists possess the power to shock the vidiots out of their stupors. I liked the idea of telling a story where the hero saves the world using books or wins through non-violent ways. While I wasn't able to completely pull that off with this story, it's definitely a theme I want to explore more in the future."

"Vidiots" isn't the only action-centric story in the book, as Jeffrey Brown contributed a swords-and-sorcery tale called "The Dark Master's Reign." "It's a fantasy tale of a lone badass kind of warrior who's attempting to infiltrate the castle of an evil overlord," described Brown. "I've always been a big fan of science fiction and fantasy, but diverged from my once intended career path of illustrating [Dungeons & Dragons] and Magic cards. I felt like 'Popgun' was the perfect place to have some fun and have a go at the genre."

First of all spectrum 16 is out. There are a ton of amazing illustrations. you can get it here. I also recieved my copies of meathaus' Go for the Gold vol. 3 which is an amazing collection of artist sketchbook drawings (and i'm in there too!). The book has a great Chris McD cover and feels like a huge coloring book.

Small Press Spotlight on Andy Ristaino

Cartoon Art Museum Exhibition: December 19, 2009 – March 14, 2010

Beginning on December 19th, 2009, the Cartoon Art Museum's ongoing Small Press Spotlight will feature the art of Andy Ristaino.

Andy Ristaino is a cartoonist and animator currently residing in the San Francisco. Originally from Franklin, Massachusetts, he has been drawing comics ever since he could. His first published work, a comic strip based on Greek myths entitled Myth Conceptions, appeared in The Pompeiiana Newsletter when he was in high school between 1992 and 1994. He attended the Rhode Island School of Design majoring in illustration/animation, during which time he self published two issues of his martial arts comedy zine Nightblade The Nearsighted Ninja, and drew a back up story featuring the character Dangerman, in Oz Squad from Patchwork Press.

Ristaino’s first solo book Life of a Fetus, a story about a bored baby who decides to jump out of the womb early and go on a road trip, was published by SLG comics in 1999 and ran for seven issues. This was soon followed by the spin off series The Babysitter, A send-up of Japanese pop culture. All three issue of The Babysitter have recently been collected by SLG comics. Ristaino’s work tends to focus on themes of the strangeness of life and the fragility of the human psyche, claustrophobia, and the odd space between understanding and incoherence. He looks at storytelling as something liquid.

His work has appeared in numerous comic anthologies such as Meathaus S.O.S., Spectrum 16, Tales of Hot Rod Horror, Spark Generators 2, Pet Noir, Go for the Gold, and the soon to be published Popgun vol. 4 from Image comics. His children’s comic the Uncredibly Confabulated Tales of Lucinda Ziggles was a regular fixture in the now defunct Nickelodeon Magazine.

Ristaino anticipates the publishing of his next SLG graphic novel Escape from Dullsville, a 288 page collection of Life of a Fetus with over 80 pages of unpublished material, sometime in 2010.

It all starts when a claustrophobic fetus, tired of its surroundings, decides to make an early exit. Setting in motion an avalanche of bizarre happenings. i have a piece in the Purrcasso art auction is this weekend in berkeley.

the new spectrum 16, featuring the best in contempory fantasy art, is out at your local book store and i have a piece in it. i haven't gotten a chance to look through it yet but i'm psyched to do so.

and last but not least i am finally done with my book "escape from dullsville" for slg but due to low pre-sales the books publication date has been delayed!!!! so i'm not sure when it will be hitting the stands.

i received my comp copies of the last issue of nickelodeon magazine

Under the guidance of Chris Duffy and Dave Roman, the comics section of Nickelodeon magazine was a monthly showcase for all the superstars of the current alternative comic scene.

Not only does this issue have my last Lucinda Ziggles strip in it but it contains comics by alot of other great artists such as gregg schiegiel, j. torres, dave cooper, steve weissman, evan dorkin, sarah dyer, jonny ryan, and many more!

I'm sad to see it go.

Extraordinary Experiences Take to the Road in
Escape from Dullsville

It all starts when a claustrophobic fetus, tired of its surroundings, decides to make an early exit. An avalanche of bizarre happenings follows because, after all, a single extraordinary circumstances tends to allow for more incredible circumstances to happen. In Escape from Dullsville by Andy Ristaino, due out from SLG Publishing in December, the precocious fetus becomes embroiled in the plots and schemes of the likes of little green men, mad scientist puppets, government cover-ups, jet-packed babysitters, strange cults, anarchists, beatniks, psychotic magicians, truckers, and crazy mothers, as it goes on the most wigged-out of road trips through the good ol' U.S. of A.

Escape from Dullsville, a 288-page black-and-white graphic novel, collects the entire run ofAndy Ristaino's comic Life of a Fetus, which was published by SLG from 1999 to 2001. It also features more than 80 new pages, including the previously unpublished issue eight, "Little Billy and Dr. Otto" comic strips, and background material. A hefty dose of of science fiction, politics, non-linear storytelling and innovative art, Escape from Dullsville tells an extraordinary story as only Andy Ristaino (The Babysitter) can concoct.

"Escape from Dullsville combines all of the genres I like," said Ristaino. "Crazy road trip movies, sci fi, '60s exploitation, comedy. It's basically a jumble of cult movie culture. The comic was designed around creating a universe that could change and grow as my ideas changed and grew," he explained. "A place to put any and all characters I created and a platform on which they can all exist at once, in a kinetic mental jumble with fluidity of storytelling, both visual and textual."

WOW. This is unusual but i'm alreaady getting buzz about escape from dullsville.

First I was contacted by the blog Comics and...Other Imaginary Tales for more info on my upcoming book. See what they had to say about my book in their indie preview section of the blog.

And then i got a Psychedelic A.P.E. award for 2009 from the website Psychedelic Central, an international music magazine focusing on psych music. You can see their A.P.E. review here. The review is written up by none other than John Thompson, who was not only one of the pioneers of San Francisco underground comics in the 60's but whom talking to was one of my personal highlights from last years wondercon.
